When I retired in 1993 I decided that
I would organise reunion visits back to the Canal Zone because my
civilian
work had taken me back to Egypt over the years. I had completed contracts (Employment Law) for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and other departments of the Government so had dealings with the British Embassy and had made many visit back to Cairo. I have arranged over 50 of these trips and my next group is in may 2010 and we are in the early stages of planning next years (2011 ). I am visiting Cairo again this week (March 19th for meetings) and have returned over 250 times in total. The Canal Zone area is still a Military Zone and we have to make applications to enter which I make all the applications to the authorities and obtain the Military Passes as well as the Visas. Many of the old Camps are still there, only many are now missile sites and have high walls round them. My old Camp has a wall over 20 feet high. Moascar has a wall in places over 30 ft tall. We stay at a hotel overlooking the Great Bitter Lakes as well as having the chance to visit the Pyramids/Sphinx/ Egyptian Museum to see the Treasures of Tutankhamen. Any person who is interested in returning back to visit the Canal Zone area can contact me and I will send them details. Alf Avison P. O. Box 99 Spalding Lincolnshire. PE11 9NS |

I have just recently published my autobiography called ‘Glittering Shadows’ about 30 pages of which are devoted to the RAF, Ismailia and the Windrush story. It was hot but at Qassasin we had a fantastic swimming pool
which we used every afternoon in the summer. Apart from that it was a
lonely existence. We also had a returned stores depot so had access to
bundles of great gear we also had our dobying done by the laundry
staff (fantastic). I moved around a bit but would be

I was a child living in the Canal Zone, we lived at Ismailia
and Abu Sueir and was evacuated on The Empress Of Australia, which had
arrived at Port Said with
more British families, but they did not leave the ship. Instead
they took aboard as many evacuees as they could and we left for
Southampton. Dad was invalided out of the RAF, due to deafness,
either late
1956 or early 1957. I still have very vivid memories of my childhood days in the Canal Zone, and enjoy visiting your site regularly. My very best wishes, I wish you continued success with your website. Sylvia Fletcher.(nee Cooke.) |

Rimini camp was about 2 miles North of Geneifa, set back
west from the Treaty Road and behind the much larger camp occupied by 26th Field, R.A. There were only 250 of us: no NAAFI, just 4 shower heads for ORs (delivering water only in the middle of the night). Flies, guard duties, road blocks, cable patrols and lousy food in the cookhouse --- but vibrant, hilarious, companions who generated the sort of comradeship that I have not encountered again over the past 55 years, and which left me with memories I still treasure. I now live in Pembrokeshire. |

I was a 3 year regular with the R.A.F. posted to Egypt
January 1954. I arrived at Ismailia in the January and after ‘arriving’ was told I was being attached to the Army, GHQ Royal Engineers, CRE Works North, Moascar Garrison. I dreaded the thought of going to the Army, but as things turned out it was an excellent posting. After the Treaty was signed I was posted back to the R.A.F. at Abu Sueir HQ MEAF Trooping section. During my postings I travelled the length of the Canal Road, Port Said and Suez. The Moascar Garrison was quite some place; we had an outdoor swimming pool which was about a 5 minute walk from camp. There was the AKC cinema and the Astra. Not forgetting the YMCA club. All in all I think we had better facilities that our lads have today. When at HQ MEAF I was in daily contact with Fayid for the trooping bods back to the UK. It was through this that 3 of us were able to get permission to make our own way home. The R.A.F. flew us FOC to Malta and from there a BEA flight to Rome, Zurich, Basel and Paris, by then we were broke, just enough left for the ferry and train to Victoria Station. I look upon my time serving in the Suez Canal era with no regrets; we did have some lads shot up whilst with the Army, but no way as bad as today. Once the brain cells get into gear for those days it is amazing how the memories come flooding back, especially some of the photographs. I have my Medal too. Thanks for the memories. Ray Young. Over the past 50 odd years I have had little reason to
recall my army service time or service pals. As a result most memories are faint, most faces have gone and only the odd name is remembered. However, in the short time I have been on the Internet and through a mate who was in the RAF, I have found these websites. I have enjoyed chats with fellows I don't even know but were in the same Regiment or Corps, some memories long forgotten have returned. I have made contact and reminised with an old friend and been reminded of other old friends and for a time, (a very short time,) felt young again. I owe these pleasant recalled memories to Charlie Delta and others who run these web pages. Thank you all. |

I think that this is a
great site and together with 'The Suppressed Story' on the Britain's
Small Wars site, the Canal Zoners site, and Suez Veterans Association site, tells the story of what went on in the Suez Canal Zone during those turbulent historical years. It is great that the dangers encountered by the British troops in the Canal Zone in the period from October 1951 until the end of 1954 are now acknowledged, but it is still the comradeship of those years and the memories that we all share that are equally important to us. I was impressed with the pictures of the Canal Zone camps, I
was at Deversoir. I loved the low life, - ha ha. - It was the gates of
hell but we had some really good mates and I have found four since
being on the internet. It is great and it has brought me to life again,
thank you for the pleasure. Was with the 181 Ind Light Batt. R.A. for four years, April 1951 till April 1955. Ex Sub/Bdr 22538628 (See my other entry on the 'Where Are You Now' page on this website.) |

Well Charlie Delta, I’m
here at last, Although I wasn’t very fast. They seek you here they seek you there, But I couldn’t find you anywhere. But now I am here I’d like to say, Could I come in and play ? There’s things I do, and things I don't Things I will, and things I won't. But I would like to share, with all, Tales of Suez that I recall. Of friends I made, and two I lost, Nothings won without the cost. So many of us did our bit, Survived the heat, the foe, the s**t, No one bothered, no one cared, But the comradeship we shared. |
Now all of us Vets, have
a choice, We have two sites, our views to voice. I hope it all goes down well, For all you Vets have tales to tell. Lets hear it lads, but please be good, And be polite as all Vets should, We have had our little tit for tat, So let us have no more of that. So Charlie Delta here we are, I think your site's a little star. It’s no good trying to hide your fame, Although my lad, you've hid your name. © Tony Tolan (Tango Tango) 28 October 2004. Thank you Tony, I appreciate that. Charlie. |
