I was a 3 year regular with the R.A.F. posted to Egypt January
1954. I arrived at Ismailia in the January and after ‘arriving’ was told I was being attached to the Army, GHQ Royal Engineers, CRE Works North, Moascar Garrison. I dreaded the thought of going to the Army, but as things turned out it was an excellent posting. After the Treaty was signed I was posted back to the R.A.F. at Abu Sueir HQ MEAF Trooping section. During my postings I travelled the length of the Canal Road, Port Said and Suez. The Moascar Garrison was quite some place; we had an outdoor swimming pool which was about a 5 minute walk from camp. There was the AKC cinema and the Astra. Not forgetting the YMCA club. All in all I think we had better facilities that our lads have today. When at HQ MEAF I was in daily contact with Fayid for the trooping bods back to the UK. It was through this that 3 of us were able to get permission to make our own way home. The R.A.F. flew us FOC to Malta and from there a BEA flight to Rome, Zurich, Basel and Paris, by then we were broke, just enough left for the ferry and train to Victoria Station. I look upon my time serving in the Suez Canal era with no regrets; we did have some lads shot up whilst with the Army, but no way as bad as today. Once the brain cells get into gear for those days it is amazing how the memories come flooding back, especially some of the photographs. I have my Medal too. Thanks for the memories. Ray Young. | Comments |
Over the past 50 odd years I have had little reason to recall my
army service time or service pals. As a result most memories are faint, most faces have gone and only the odd name is remembered. However, in the short time I have been on the Internet and through a mate who was in the RAF, I have found these websites. I have enjoyed chats with fellows I don't even know but were in the same Regiment or Corps, some memories long forgotten have returned. I have made contact and reminised with an old friend and been reminded of other old friends and for a time, (a very short time,) felt young again. I owe these pleasant recalled memories to Charlie Delta and others who run these web pages. Thank you all. |

that I could only see in my memory as I lost all of my photos when my home

I think that this is a great
site and together with 'The Suppressed Story' on the Britain's
Small Wars site, the Canal Zoners site, and Suez Veterans Association site, tells the story of what went on in the Suez Canal Zone during those turbulent historical years. It is great that the dangers encountered by the British troops in the Canal Zone in the period from October 1951 until the end of 1954 are now acknowledged, but it is still the comradeship of those years and the memories that we all share that are equally important to us. given to the R.N. Shore Establishment covering the whole

There must have been 100 plus R.N., Royal Marines and W.R.N.S. as well as 2 Royal Marine Commando Units at Ismailia serving there from 1950 to 1955 so there must still be some of us left. ?????
